13.09.2022

The head of the Polish government hosted the silver medalists of the Men's Volleyball World Championship 2022 in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. The Polish national team ranked second, but still remains in first place in the international FIVB volleyball player ranking of 2022. Our country, along with Slovenia, co-hosted this year's Men's Volleyball Championship.

Hosting the Volleyball World Championship

This year's Men's Volleyball World Championships were held in Poland and Slovenia. This follows the decision of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), which in March deprived Russia of the right to host this prestigious tournament. It was the 20th edition of the Men's Volleyball World Cup. The first one took place in 1949 in Prague, while the last one was held in 2018 in Italy and Bulgaria. It was the Polish national team’s 18th start in the Volleyball World Cup. So far, the white and reds’ greatest successes have been gold medals in 1974, 2014 and 2018.

Later this year – in the autumn – the women's teams will compete for the title of world champions in Polish and Dutch courts. This means that our country will have hosted the two largest volleyball events in the world in one year.

"We managed to organise this championship within a short time. They stood at a very high organizational level. We are now also applying to host the Volleyball World Championship within the next 4 years. I hope that we receive this privilege, because we have really shown class”, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Final at the Katowice Spodek

Group matches were held in Katowice, Gliwice and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. On September 11, the final of the tournament took place at the Spodek in Katowice, where the Polish national team won the silver medal. Poland’s volleyball players reached the final by defeating many teams, including America and Brazil.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki congratulated and thanked the volleyball players of the Polish national team for the fighting spirit, professionalism, effort and class that the players showed.

"I would sincerely like to thank our team, on behalf of all the Polish people, for bringing us so many great emotions. If someone had said 10 years ago that the colour silver would not be good enough for us, I would probably have said that someone must have made a mistake”, said the Head of the Polish Government, and he added: "Great game, extraordinary emotions”.
