Prime Minister in Bratislava: Europe must fight for its traditional values on which the European Union was built
19.09.2022
The most important challenges for contemporary Europe were the main topic of the 2nd Conservative Summit in Bratislava with the participation of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. The head of government made a speech on contemporary challenges for Central Europe. He also met with the Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger. He emphasized, that in recent decades, Europe was sure that the demons of the 20th century would be forgotten. The reality, however, is different.
Central Europe’s responsibility for the future of Europe
Summit participants discussed the challenges faced by contemporary Europe from the perspective of the Central European region. The topics of the discussion also included issues such as Russian aggression against Ukraine or centralization tendencies in the European Union.
“In Central Europe we knew perfectly well what the threat of Russian imperialism and passivity in the face of this imperialism was. When we warned about the revival of these neo-imperial ambitions of the Kremlin, we were treated with a pinch of salt. Today we see, that our voice was prophetic.” said the prime minister during his speech. As he emphasized, Europe only now admits Poland to be right.
Fairness must be a value in European Union
The head of government negatively addressed the mechanisms of forming prices and margins on the energy market in Europe. He gave an example of Lithuania importing 70 % energy mainly from Scandinavia. As he added, probably from Sweden. He pointed out that Sweden transfers energy at remarkably high prices to its less wealthy Lithuanian neighbors through the Baltic Sea.
„Fairness must be a value in the EU, and it is not. Today we can see how the energy market in the EU works, and despite the fact that, of course, the original cause is the war in Ukraine and malicious Russian policy, we see that the established mechanisms are highly unfair to those who are less wealthy” emphasized Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki
Meeting of the Prime Ministers of Poland and Slovakia
During his visit, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger. The politicians discussed current issues in Polish-Slovak relations, including continuation of active cooperation within the framework of the new European North-South Transport Corridor and key topics related to the international situation.
The agenda of the meeting also included the issue of further assistance to the fighting Ukraine. The prime ministers of Poland and Slovakia also addressed the subject of sanctions against Russia. Prime Minister Morawiecki pointed to the need to implement adjustment mechanisms ensuring the proper functioning of the single market - including import duties and quotas for Russian crude oil and petroleum products.
