Prime Minister in Paris: united, we are better suited to protect ourselves against crises
29.08.2022
The issues related to energy and defence in the context of the potential cooperation between Poland and France, bilateral relations and the European agenda are the main issues raised during the meeting held by the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the President of France Emmanuel Macron. The politicians have also discussed continuing the support for Ukraine. During the visit in Paris, the head of government has also met the representatives of the French employers' organization MEDEF.
Unity is the road to resolving the crisis caused by the Russia’s aggression on Ukraine.
The Prime Minister emphasised that by attacking Ukraine, Russia has caused a great crisis, which is now only continuing to develop. It is related to security, energy efficiency – it is a political and economic crisis in the widest possible meaning. The head of the Polish government emphasised that it is worth to ask how to protect ourselves against such crises.
– Primarily, when we are united, but it is also economic cooperation and investments. Such, which are going to prevent sinking deeper into the energy crisis would be the best method for getting out of the trouble – the Prime Minister summarised.
The President of the Council of Ministers has emphasised that Europe has fallen into a “geopolitical coma,” while somebody else is furnishing our world for us. The Prime Minister emphasised that the actions of European countries should be based on the motto of “one for all, all for one,” even if we differ in specific matters.
Sovereignty from Russian energy materials
The head of the government discussed the raw material security of both countries with the Prime Minister of France. This is one of the key issues, in particular now, when the Russian aggression on Ukraine and Putin’s raw material blackmail translates into an international energy crisis.
– Poland has largely ensured itself a sovereignty from the Russian raw materials, however I believe that plenty of our partners in the European Union must act together in this direction, to guarantee such sovereignty for themselves – said the Prime Minister.
During the discussions, he proposed to freeze ETS prices at the level of 30 euro or within a narrow price range close to 30 euro for the years to come. The second mechanism he presented included altering the principles of calculating the prices, in order to ensure that the end price is not the exclusive factor for determining prices for the entire market.
The development of the European defence capabilities
The development of the European defence capabilities was another issue raised during the meeting. Poland believes that more ambitious goals in terms of defence expenditures are required.
– Hand in hand with France, we are thinking about strengthening the European defensive capabilities. Today, we are not facing the end of the war in Ukraine, we are not even close to that, which is why our response must be patient, measured and yet definite – the Prime Minister emphasised.
The propositions of the European Commissioner related to short-term orders for the most pressing and the most critical defence products should respond to the factual needs. The financial support granted by the EC should also cover purchases made by the individual Member States. This is going to allow to restore our combat readiness faster than in the case of mutual orders.
Extending the cooperation between Poland and France
Apart from the conversation with President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Morawiecki met the representatives of the French employers' organization MEDEF.
The discussions with the representatives of the French business intended to widen the cooperation between Poland and France to include new possibilities. – It is going to continue to grow faster as Europe becomes more secure – said the Prime Minister. He appealed to the participants of the conference.
During the MEDEF conference, the head of the Polish government emphasized that currently over 1300 French companies uses economic stability on the Polish market, the infrastructure and the qualified workforce. He added that if France cares about economically independent Europe, Poland is going to be one of the currently safest areas for investments.
Poland is the leader of growth in Europe. We rank second in terms of the pace of growth internationally since 1990, right after China. The growth in Poland for 30 years is not an economic miracle, but the fruit of the hard work of employees, but French companies have also contributed to that growth. I would like to thank you for that – said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
