24.02.2022

In connection with Russia's armed attack on Ukraine, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki addressed the 49th session of the Sejm. The head of government presented the current situation and further planned measures. Among the most important were strong sanctions, the need to militarily strengthen the eastern part of NATO and the EU and not to succumb to Russian disinformation and propaganda. Ukraine's struggle is also a struggle for the freedom of the whole of Europe. The Prime Minister stressed Poland's commitment to providing humanitarian aid to the victims of the conflict.

Representatives of the most important European and world institutions fully understand the threats that the Polish authorities have long signalled. The PM stressed the need to develop the most far-reaching sanctions against Russia and assured Poland remains safe. For a long time, the actions of the Polish authorities have served to strengthen defence. Uniformed services and the army have been raised to a state of heightened readiness. The PM stressed the importance of establishing the Committee for National Security and Defence Affairs, which is responsible, among other things, for drafting a law on homeland defence and strategic analyses of the Kremlin's actions.

Poland’s continued security and restoring the territorial integrity of Ukraine will depend on a decisive response to Russian aggression. In the PM’s opinion, these actions should include implementing the most severe possible package of sanctions against the Russian Federation and the military strengthening of the eastern part of NATO and the EU.

Russia has launched a hybrid war – in addition to conventional attacks, we are seeing increasing hacking attacks on critical infrastructure and disinformation and propaganda activities. Both the political class and the media should be aware that these are additional tools of aggression in the hands of Vladimir Putin.

In the face of Russian aggression, Poland was one of the first countries to take humanitarian action supporting Ukraine. We will continue to help, receive refugees and medically assist the wounded if needed. Let us respond with truth, unity, calmness and solidarity – Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appealed.
