Prime Minister in Upper Silesia: Katowice-Giszowiec road interchange is one of the key interchanges for Katowice and the entire agglomeration

19.06.2022

The outward extension of the Katowice-Giszowiec road interchange is one of the most important road investments in Katowice in years. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki attended the opening ceremony of this road section, which drivers will be able to use from 20 June. The outward extension has made it possible to separate transit traffic from local traffic. In practice, this means a significant improvement in safety and living comfort for residents. During his visit to Katowice, the head of government also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of a part of Upper Silesia into Poland. The Prime Minister took part in a Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice.

Improved driving conditions for drivers from Katowice and surrounding areas

The extension of the Katowice-Giszowiec road interchange on DK81 and DK86 has been one of the most important road investments in Katowice for years.

  • The works, which were carried out at a cost of around PLN 300 million, were works that will help the residents of Katowice and the Giszowiec area. This is because they will relieve the traffic. Local traffic merged here with transit traffic," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki informed. The head of government participated in the ceremonial opening of the road, which drivers will be able to use from 20 June.

About 58.5 thousand vehicles cross the DK86 at the section of the Giszowiec district every day. The total length of the extended and reconstructed sections of the DK81 and DK86 is over 3.5 km.

  • I believe that Katowice will become an even stronger economic magnet and economic and communication centre for the entire region of Silesia, in fact, for the whole of southern Poland - as it is already happening here today. Infrastructural solutions such as this are essential to achieve this," the Prime Minister added.

100th anniversary of the incorporation of a part of Upper Silesia into Poland

2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of part of Upper Silesia into Poland. - Today, in Silesia, in Katowice, we are celebrating the centenary of the official incorporation of Silesia into the Republic of Poland. A lot has changed over these 100 years, but the importance of Silesia for Poland, for the Polish economy, has not," stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

On 20 June 1922, after three uprisings and a plebiscite, the Polish army entered the city of Katowice. Then, on 16 July, the act was signed which sealed the incorporation of the Silesian lands into Poland. This was a very important event. It ended the process through which our country shaped its borders after regaining independence. On this occasion, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in a Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Katowice.

Celebrations of this important anniversary are underway. Polish citizens can attend concerts, watch exhibitions and films related to the incorporation of a part of Upper Silesia into Poland. In addition, by decision of President Andrzej Duda, 20 June will be permanently celebrated in Poland as the National Day of the Silesian Uprisings.

Information on the anniversary celebrations is available on the website of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.  [ Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego.]
