Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: A1 motorway provides new prospects for Poland

11.05.2023

The government is committed to ensuring that Poles can travel on comfortable, modern and safe roads. Road investments also mean new economic development prospects for our country. All works on the section of the A1 motorway between Piotrków Trybunalski and Kamieńsk have already been completed. This means that drivers can now make full use of the 560 km-long route from the Tricity to the Czech border. It now takes only around five hours to travel all the distance along this route. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the last of the newly built sections of the A1 motorway – Kamieńsk–Radomsko. As part of the National Road Construction Programmes, we have already commissioned more than 2,000 km of modern roads since 2015, with more than 1,200 km under construction.

Road Investments are Investments in the Backbone of the Polish Economy

The A1 motorway increases the capacity for development and trade and brings entirely new development prospects for our country. “This investment, together with investments in access, commune, district and provincial roads, are investments in the system of Polish roads, in the economic organism that is called Poland,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed.

As the head of the government explained, the A1 motorway will also significantly speed up the journey for drivers. “The distance from the Tricity to the Polish-Czech border in Gorzyczki can now be travelled in 4.5–5 hours, including rest, while obeying road traffic law – which I very strongly advocate,” the Prime Minister pointed out.

A1 Kamieńsk–Radomsko Motorway

The A1 motorway is one of the most important roads in Poland and Central Europe. Thanks to the completion of works on the section between Piotrków Trybunalski and Kamieńsk, drivers can now drive smoothly down the convenient road from the Baltic Sea to the Czech Republic, with a speed limit of 140 km. The last section of the A1 motorway, on which work was recently completed, is more than 24 km long and has two concrete-surfaced roadways with three lanes each.

Road Construction in Poland Since 2015

For the comfort of drivers and the development of the country, the government is building modern and comfortable expressways and motorways. Bypasses are also being built to relieve congestion in cities while increasing safety in developed areas.

Since 2015, as part of the National Road Construction Programmes:

  • we have put 2,054 km of roads into service, worth PLN 75 billion;
  • 1,204 km of roads worth PLN 63.6 billion are under construction;
  • 262 km of roads worth PLN 19.8 billion are under tender;
  • tasks worth PLN 195 billion are awaiting tender.

As part of a programme to build 100 bypasses:

  • we put two bypasses into service: Smolajn on National Road No. 51 with a length of 1.7 km and Brzezie on National Road No. 25 with a length of 4.5 km;
  • 105.3 km (13 tasks) worth PLN 2,567 million are under construction;
  • there are three tasks under tender, with a value of PLN 369 million and a length of 12.6 km;
  • there are 82 tasks in the pipeline with a length of 746 km.

Road safety

We are constantly investing in the national road network. As a result, we provide not only comfortable but also safe routes. As a result of the efforts made by the National Road Safety Council, the Police and the Main Road Transport Inspectorate, Poland is today the country with the highest decrease in the number of accidents and their victims in Europe.

Since 2015, there has been a 35 per cent decrease in the annual number of road accident victims in Poland. In 2015, nearly 40,000 people were injured in accidents, while in 2022, this number has decreased to around 25,000 people. This means over 15,000 fewer injured people per year.
