Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at the Port of Gdańsk: all coal brought to Poland is of high quality every time

22.10.2022

The head of the Polish Government met with the management of the Port of Gdansk and representatives of ministries to discuss the re-distribution of imported coal to Polish homes. It must meet quality requirements to be re-distributed to local authorities. Cooperation between the Government and local authorities will ensure that the raw material is sold to residents throughout Poland. There are also regular deliveries to power plants and combined heat and power plants - key energy entities in our country.

We import millions of tonnes of coal on an ongoing basis

In response to the energy resource crisis caused by Russia's criminal attack on Ukraine, Poland is ensuring that coal is available to its inhabitants for the coming months. Our ports are systematically receiving new coal shipments from all over the world. Imported coal must be certified and comply with quality standards specified in the ordinance.

”Here, in places where you can see piles of coal today, the squares were empty a few months ago. This means that the entire logistics of our coal imports, ordered from 17 different sources from around the world, certified coal, high-quality coal, was built within a few months of the beginning of the war which Russia declared on Ukraine”, the Prime Minister noted during his visit to the Port of Gdansk.

Coal distribution is now the most important issue

We focus on ensuring that all entities have the necessary supplies of heating coal. Coal from our ports must be efficiently delivered to everyone who needs it. Central government has appealed to local government officials to become involved in the distribution chain, and the operations of this mechanism are becoming more and more visible.

“During the past week alone, 169 trains full of coal was sent to various local authorities, combined heat and power plants and power plants all over the country. 2,700 trucks full of coal have been distributed all over Poland”, said the Head of Government. “I am glad that this sales logistics is all starting to work properly, in such a way that coal gets to end users where it is most needed - he concluded.

We are determined, together with local authorities, to make sure that the new logistic mechanism efficiently distributes raw materials to every corner of Poland. We are ensuring the best possible cooperation between central government and local government. That is why the Government has introduced the Coal Distribution Law, which provides great flexibility for local authorities in terms of organising sales.

We arrange help where it is needed

The Government has adopted a bill that facilitates the distribution of coal by local authorities. As a result, residents will have greater access to this raw material at a lower price. Local authorities buy coal for PLN 1,500 and sell it for a maximum of PLN 2,000. The difference between buying from an importer and selling to residents is the income of the commune. These are funds to cover the costs of coal distribution.

It should be emphasised that the price of this raw material in private warehouses today often exceeds PLN 3,500. We are doing everything to change this and mitigate the consequences of the crisis for the Polish people.
