Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the Senioralia: You, the senior citizens, are needed. The whole nation most needs you

29.09.2021

Senior citizen policy is an essential part of our Government's activities. Financial security and activation of the elderly - these are the two of our main goals. Evidence of the effectiveness of the measures we have taken to date includes, among others, lowering the retirement age, payment of the 13th, and as early as 14 November, pension, free medication or the Senior+ Programme. The Polish Deal will bring new, favourable financial solutions for senior citizens. No tax will be paid on pensions and disability benefits up to PLN 2,500 a month. The reform will benefit 90% of pensioners, and 2/3 of them will not pay tax at all. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke about support for the elderly during the Senioralia.

We efficiently support our senior citizens

We provide the older generation with comprehensive support and care. During the meeting with senior citizens, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki emphasised how important it is for the Government to meet with them directly and talk about their needs.

Our activities towards older people are based on two pillars:
•    programmes and measures that guarantee financial security, e.g., benefit valorisation, 13th and, as of this year, 14th pensions,
•    programmes that encourage activity - Senior+ or Active+ (Aktywni+).

A total of around PLN 35 billion will be allocated to support senior citizens throughout this year. These funds will make the lives of senior citizens easier.

"We want to create the best possible space for you to feel as comfortable as possible. We are transferring the government money that we have gained by tightening the tax system," said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the meeting with senior citizens.

Numerous government programmes and measures improve the situation of our senior citizens

The head of the Polish Government recalled the problems of senior citizens under the previous Government - "It is necessary to recall the bad things in order to create a comparative scale: penny-sized, minimal pension valorisations under the rule of PO, the increased retirement age, the shameful 'take your grandmother's ID card' campaign. All this is in the past."

It was the current Government that lowered the retirement age, whereas additional benefits and programmes targeted at senior citizens support the household budgets of many pensioners.
•    Senior citizens have been receiving a 13th pension every year since 2019. This autumn, we will also pay the 14th pension - in this case, the income criterion will apply.
•    The "Free prescription medicine for senior citizens" (Darmowe leki dla seniora) programme - we guarantee free prescription medicine from the reimbursement list for all citizens over the age of 75. These people have also earned the right to receive free prescription medicine, foodstuffs for particular nutritional uses and medical devices.
•    The "Senior+" programme consists of government support for local government units in the establishment and operation of Day Care Centres and Clubs for senior citizens. After years of neglect, at the end of 2015, there were less than 2.8 thousand of such institutions; today, there are more than 23 thousand Senior+ Day Care Centres and Clubs.
•    "Mother 4+" (Mama 4+) - provides additional support to people who have dedicated themselves to raising at least four children. Thanks to the Programme, the right to an old-age pension will not be affected if a person gives up or significantly reduces their professional career.

"Polish Deal" for senior citizens

The Polish Deal programme will bring new, favourable financial solutions for the elderly. Pensions and disability benefits up to 2,500 PLN will be tax-free. As a result, 2/3 of pensioners will not pay any tax at all, and people with higher benefits will pay tax only on the amount, which exceeds 2,500 PLN. The new regulations are expected to come into force as early as January 2022.
