Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki during the Strategic Ark Conference: “I call for isolation of the President of Russia”

19.05.2022

During the Strategic Ark Conference organised by the Polish Institute of International Affairs, the Head of the Government stressed that if Ukraine wins against Russia, it will be mostly its own victory, but if it loses, the loss will be shared by all of us and will mark the end of the world as we know it. “For this reason, I call for isolation of the President of Russia. It is true that diplomacy requires dialogue, but one does not negotiate with terrorists. Criminals must be judged, and the Russian World ideology must be defeated and eliminated,” assessed the Prime Minister.

Russian murders should wake us up from the geopolitical dream

The Head of the Government referred to the massacre of Ukrainian citizens in Bucha and the murders of civilian population in Irpin and Mariupol. “All these events should wake us up from the geopolitical dream and make us discard the old delusions,” stressed the Prime Minister, and added that today, we have a reason to try to understand the dynamics of the rebirth of imperialism and possibly totalitarianism of Russia.

The Prime Minister noted that attempts to allow Vladimir Putin to save his face in the international community are already beginning to appear. “But how can one try to save or preserve something which is almost completely lost?” asked the Prime Minister.

Today, the heart of Europe beats in Central and Eastern Europe

The Head of the Government stated that since the very dawn of geopolitics, Poland has been considered a country with strategic importance for the entire Europe. “And since Poland is located in the heart, it means that it is responsible for the whole of Europe. But today, this heart beats not just in Poland, but also in Ukraine, in the Baltic States and in the whole Central and Eastern Europe,” stressed the Prime Minister.

“We have witnessed the horrors of war too often to ignore the warning signs now. Russia can only be deterred through our unity, military capabilities and harsh sanctions, not through phone calls or discussions with Putin,” said the Head of the Government, and emphasised that we need to provide Ukraine with military support and reinforce the eastern flank of NATO and that united, we are much stronger than Russia.

“Ukrainians are fighting on the military front line to fend off the Russian army, while we need to win on another front line and destroy Russia’s economic potential,” stressed the Prime Minister.

Poland will support Sweden and Finland in the event of a Russian attack

The Head of the Government declared that should Sweden or Finland be attacked during their accession to NATO, Poland will support them. He emphasised that if the two countries join NATO, it will be an important signal for reinforcement of security in Europe and a severe blow to the Kremlin.

“We need to remember that enlarging NATO to include Sweden and Finland is a political engagement and commitment of the entire Alliance and the entire transatlantic community towards Ukraine,” assessed the Prime Minister, and added that “It was the defenders of Kharkiv, Mariupol and Kyiv who opened the door to enlargement of NATO. This door also needs to be opened to Ukrainians.”
