Development and deepening of economic relations

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki pointed to the need to further develop and deepen economic relations with Austria. At the same time, he expressed hope that today's Poland-Austria Economic Forum "Green Future" will constitute an appropriate stimulus for this.

In the first half of 2021, trade turnover between Poland and Austria amounted to EUR 5.13 billion. Exports from Poland to Austria amounted to EUR 2.9 billion. Poland recorded a trade balance surplus of EUR 839.1 million. The value of Austria's direct investments in Poland at the end of 2019 (NBP data) amounted to EUR 8.26 billion. The largest investors include: CA IMMO, Warimpex Finanz- und Beteiligungs AG, Strabag SE, Leier Holding GmbH and Wienerberger AG.

Current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border

The current situation on the Polish-Belarusian border was also discussed during the meeting. The Polish Prime Minister pointed out that Belarus continues its hybrid attacks against Poland and the Baltic States in order to exert pressure on the EU to withdraw its sanctions policy. At the same time, he assured that Poland properly protects the EU's external border with Belarus. The head of the Polish Government appreciated the diplomatic support to date and pointed out that only a coherent and unambiguous position of all Member States on the joint protection of the EU's eastern external border could discourage Belarus from continuing its hostile actions. He assessed that the exerted pressure is the greatest challenge that Poland and our region are facing.

Climate policy - we stress the need to pursue a fair transition

The Prime Minister pointed out that the EU Member States should strive for a fair transition, which leaves no one behind and strengthens energy security and meets the real needs of citizens. In this context, Poland sees the need to take action to address the problem of rising energy prices in the EU and, at the same time to ensure stable energy sources.

It is essential that the Member States understand the challenges posed by the EU climate package and that they should work together to find beneficial solutions and, where necessary, make compromises. Poland recognises the importance of the upcoming COP26 in Glasgow. Given that the EU is responsible for less than 10% of global emissions, the time has come for others to take decisive action as well.
