Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki Meets US Secretary of Energy under the Polish-American Strategic Energy Dialogue
22.09.2021
Nuclear energy, cyber-security, fossil fuels, energy infrastructure - these were the main topics of discussion during the meetings of the Polish-American Strategic Energy Dialogue. On 22 September 2021, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm met to discuss energy cooperation and the Polish-American Strategic Energy Dialogue.
Polish-American Strategic Dialogue
The Polish-American Strategic Dialogue in the field of energy was announced in a joint declaration signed on 18 September 2018 in Washington, D.C. by the Presidents of Poland and the United States. So far, the dialogue has resulted in:
- strengthened cooperation in the area of LNG supplies to Poland;
- preparation for exercises on cyber security of the power grid with the cooperation of PSE and US laboratories;
- agreement in the field of the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes.
The Polish nuclear project
The meeting raised the issue of nuclear energy in Poland, which is a strategic choice for building a clean, zero-emission energy system and replacement of coal-fired power plants in our country. Against this background, the development of the latest modular technologies was also discussed.
The agreement in the field of the use of nuclear energy for civil purposes was signed on 12 June 2019. It expresses the readiness of both signatories to cooperate under the Polish nuclear project. It gave rise to the signing of an intergovermental agreement on cooperation in October 2020 (which entered into force on 24 February 2021). It aims at the development of a nuclear energy programme.
Liquefied gas
The talks also covered the issue of liquefied gas. The United States are its largest supplier for our country. Together with our domestic mining, which continues at approx. 4 bln m3, liquefied gas from the USA is soon to meet about 2/3 of our country’s demand for this raw material.
