Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki held talks with Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir in Warsaw. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss key bilateral issues - including the role of the Polish community living in Iceland. The politicians also discussed current international topics.
Polish-Icelandic talks
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke with the Prime Minister of Iceland about bilateral economic cooperation but also about Polish people who live in Iceland. Our compatriots constitute the largest group among the foreigners in Iceland (more than 23,000 out of a total of 50,000 immigrants) and contribute to creating new opportunities for economic and cultural cooperation between the countries. "Polish-Icelandic relations are very good" - assessed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Due to the strong relationship, Iceland recently established its embassy in Poland.
Support for Ukraine
The issue of cooperation to support Europe's security through assistance to Ukraine was also addressed during the meeting. The Prime Minister of Iceland visited Kyiv yesterday. "Thank you for all your help in getting to Ukraine. It was very good to benefit from Polish assistance" – said Katrín Jakobsdóttir. Last year, the head of the Icelandic government also took part in the Donors' Conference for Ukraine in Warsaw, which was organised under the leadership of the Prime Ministers of Poland and Sweden.
International cooperation
The heads of governments also discussed multilateral cooperation, including within NATO and the Council of Europe, where Iceland currently holds the presidency. Poland is an important political and economic partner for Iceland in the Central and Eastern European region. Since Poland's accession to the European Union, economic cooperation between the two countries has been implemented based on the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA).
