15.03.2023

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki hosted Latvian Prime Minister Arturs Krišjānis Kariņš. The politicians met in Warsaw to discuss current bilateral and international issues. During the meeting, the discussion focused primarily on further prospects for actions to strengthen the security of our region of Europe. The Prime Ministers discussed cooperation within NATO and support for Ukraine in its defence against Russian invaders. They also discussed the expansion of energy infrastructure in our region and the energy security of our countries. The head of the Polish government also talked about key European issues with his Latvian counterpart. Latvia will take over the Presidency of the Council of Europe in the coming months, hence the importance of discussing the future agenda for our continent.

Poland and Latvia have a good understanding of our region's issues

Latvia is one of the Baltic states. As Central-Eastern European countries, we share similar challenges and perspectives. Together with Latvia, we are cooperating to develop our region, strengthen the ties between our countries, but also – above all – to strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank, including Poland.

“It is good to talk to countries with similar views and mindset. Especially during these tragic moments of history and the events in Ukraine," stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at the meeting with the Prime Minister of Latvia.

Poland has long emphasised the importance of energy security on the international arena. During his meeting with the Prime Minister of Latvia, the head of the Polish government devoted a lot of time precisely to discussing the expansion of energy infrastructure in our region.

We are acting together on many international issues

Cooperation with countries that are geographically close to us naturally develops into good cooperation on many levels. We are interested in joint infrastructural, economic or cultural projects. Today, however, the most important issue that concerns us both is security. We are happy to have allies who share our outlook on this matter and support us internationally, among other things.

“You are not only our friend, but also our ally in many international activities. It is extremely important, as we all know, to restore security and peace in the region," said the head of the Polish government.

Discussions on European perspectives

Recently, we have been pursuing an intensive diplomatic offensive, through meetings with many country leaders. The visit of the Latvian Prime Minister is an important point through which we can share reflections on further action in key areas. In the near future, Latvia will preside over the Council of Europe and thus build its agenda. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the Latvian Prime Minister discussed the immediate prospects for international action – including the issues of further sanctions on Russia and Belarus.

“I am delighted that I can host you in Warsaw, and that we can exchange views on what is happening now and what will happen in the coming months," concluded the Prime Minister.
