Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on support for seniors

19.08.2023

Our actions are guided by intergenerational solidarity. Seniors, in a special way, can count on the government's support. We make sure that they experience their autumn years, after years of work, with dignity. In April, the 13th pension came to seniors. In May, the Council of Ministers adopted a bill that introduced the 14th pension as a benefit payable every year. In July, the law was signed by the President. Elderly people can also benefit from government programmes such as, among others, Senior+ and Medicines75+. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met with senior citizens in the village of Waplewo Wielkie.

- I will do my utmost to improve the lives of seniors day by day, month by month, year by year in these significant areas: material, financial, health care but also spiritual, cultural, relationships with others, which may they be as beautiful as possible and may they be as numerous as possible, the Prime Minister stressed.

14th pension - paid annually

The 14th pension was paid for the first time in 2021. In 2022, pensioners again received this benefit. By government decision, the 14th pension will be paid every year. This is another important step towards improving the lives of senior citizens.

- This is possible because we have fixed public finances. We have taken a huge amount of money from the “VAT mafia” and the tax offenders, and are giving it to senior citizens. That is, securing their life from the material side is our, my great commitment, which we will continue, the head of government pointed out.

In 2022, we also introduced a solution that allowed pensioners to save even more. The amount of the 13th and 14th pensions has been exempted from personal income tax. Seniors can use the additional funds to pursue their dreams.

13th pension - for everyone, regardless of income

From 2019, pensioners are granted a 13th pension. This is an additional annual benefit that every pensioner receives, regardless of income. In April, 9.8 million seniors were able to enjoy extra money for everyday expenses.

This year, the 13th pension amounted to PLN 1588.44, an increase of PLN 250, relative to 2022.

In addition, benefits will be increased by the indexation rate*, but not by less than PLN 250. Benefit supplements will also be increased by the indexation rate.

The indexation rate for pensions in 2023 is 114.8%.

Government programmes promoting active living for senior citizens

We want our senior citizens to be active and healthy. Our programmes make this possible. Senior citizens have the opportunity to meet, talk to each other and enjoy various creative activities within their age group.

Senior+

We help local authorities to create and maintain day care centres and clubs for seniors. Between 2015 and 2022, nearly 1,200 “Senior+” support centres were established in Poland. We have allocated PLN 300 million to the programme.

Active+

We financially support projects that target seniors. Between 2021 and 2022, we subsidised a total of 630 tasks. As part of these activities, approximately 170,000 older people received support.

Caring for the health of seniors

- We are fixing the entire health service precisely with a view also to you dear seniors, said the Prime Minister.

In 2016, we introduced the Medicines75+ programme. Thanks to it, seniors can benefit from free medicines, the list of which is being expanded all the time. Nearly 4 million pensioners have already saved more than PLN 4.5 billion on medicines.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki recalled that from 1 January 2024 at the latest, the programme will be extended for new age categories by a government decision. Approximately 5 million seniors over 65 and 7 million children will benefit from our programme. Thanks to the extension of the free medicines programme, a total of 16 million people will benefit from it. This means more money in the pockets of seniors and young families with children!

We have also launched the Home Care (DOM) programme. This is a comprehensive remote health monitoring service for patients. The programme includes, among other things: measuring saturation levels, measuring blood sugar levels or measuring blood pressure levels. This allows seniors to feel safer and receive treatment at home.

*The statutory benefit indexation rate is the average annual consumer price index in the previous calendar year increased by at least 20 per cent of the real increase in the average salary in the previous calendar year.
