Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on the opening of the Vistula Spit Ditch: it is a path to freedom, new opportunities and opportunities

17.09.2022

The opening of the shipping channel through the Vistula Spit is the end of our country's dependence on Russia. The Ditch of the Vistula Spit enables free, all year-round navigation of sea vessels to the ports of Elbląg, Frombork or Tolkmicko. For the first time in the post-war history of Poland, you are free to cross the Vistula Lagoon without having to pass through Russian territorial waters. This investment will increase transport safety in Poland. It will also create thousands of new jobs and give impetus to the development of tourism.

"Symbolically, on the day of the 83rd anniversary of the Soviet Union's invasion of Poland, we are breaking the last shackles of our dependence on the Soviet Union and, more recently, Russia," the Head of the Polish Government stressed.

Independence from Russia

The port of Elbląg was the only port to which the freedom of navigation after World War II was limited. This was due to restrictive regulations on the Russian side, which applied to ships passing through the Piława Strait.

„The Piława Strait was one piece of our geopolitical dependence of the Polish on Russia. Today we are removing this piece from the political chessboard”, announced Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

At the same time, the Vistula Spit Ditch is part of implementing the European Union's strategy in the field of maritime safety. Maintaining the full principle of freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea is a strategic goal of all countries in our region.

Testimony to strong will and fast action

The Prime Minister stressed that the Baltic Sea was a great opportunity for our country and provided amazing development prospects. The ditch opens up new opportunities for this region: in addition to gaining independence and improving safety, the investment is an opportunity to develop tourism and water recreation and create thousands of new jobs.

"Today we see how these investments open up new opportunities, fresh chances - not only for Elbląg  but also for the whole of the several dozen kilometer long section of the Polish coast, which used to be dependent on Russia. We are losing this dependence today – emphasised the Head of the Polish Government.

Work is still underway on the second and third stages of the investment, which will be completed in 2023. These include the modernisation of the Elbląg River fairway, the construction of a new, rotary bridge in Nowaków - over a hundred-meter-high - and dredging works on the Vistula Lagoon. However, for the first time in the post-war history of Poland, it is already possible to sail freely through the Vistula Lagoon, bypassing the Russian coastal zone.

Projects of great change

Thanks to our independence, we can carry out great projects, in areas including economic policy and also thanks to the recovery of public finances. At the same time, projects of great change provide many opportunities for Poles. Political and patriotic will also helps make them possible.

”We take care of every, even forgotten, piece of Polish, every region, every municipality and every county”, said the Head of the Polish Government.
