During his visit to the Republic of Moldova, the Prime Minister met with Prime Minister Dorin Recean, as well as with President Maia Sandu. The talks focused on multidimensional support for the Republic of Moldova in the wake of Russian aggression on Ukrainian territory. The leaders also discussed issues of broadly understood bilateral cooperation on economic and financial projects. The heads of government also signed a memorandum of understanding on cyber security between the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Moldova and Poland.
Security of Poland and Moldova
Since the beginning of Russia's attack on Ukraine, Poland and Moldova have been assisting Ukrainian authorities and citizens. Many refugees have found a haven in our countries. We condemn the illegal Russian invasion. We express our full support for the fighting Ukraine.
Both countries have been affected by the hybrid war played out by Russia after its military attack on Ukraine. We are facing gas blackmail, energy blackmail, Putinflation, Russian propaganda. Russia is threatening the Moldovan government in various ways and violating their airspace.
In an era of hybrid warfare, digital security is also important. Poland will support Moldova in its efforts to secure the digital space. To this end, the Prime Ministers signed a memorandum of understanding on cyber security between the governments of the two countries.
“We have been neighbours for centuries and today, in view of Russian aggression against Ukraine, we are also facing similar problems, challenges, risks and threats,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Moldova’s admission to the European Union
Poland acknowledges the efforts made by the Republic of Moldova to join the European Union. We strongly support Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome the European Council's decision to grant the Republic of Moldova EU candidate status. We support the Moldovan authorities in this endeavour through actions on many levels.
“We also support Moldova's efforts to join the European Union. Let this be a kind of vestibule before entering the security structures in a wider context,” emphasised the Polish head of government.
Multifaceted bilateral cooperation
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has decided to donate 20 industrial power generators to Moldova. We want to protect Moldovan hospitals and other public institutions from power cuts.
“Poland has very good experience in this area. We are a country that provides energy security also to Ukraine,” stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Bilateral cooperation between our countries can be seen in many fields. LOT Polish Airlines operate additional flights between Poland and Moldova, whereby we are developing economic cooperation. We are also helping to expand the activities of development institutions in Moldova through Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasised that Poland is among the top ten most important countries in terms of trade with the Republic of Moldova.
Meeting with the President of Moldova and the Polish community
During his visit to Moldova, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also met with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu. The politicians discussed Polish-Moldovan cooperation, development aid for Moldova, integration with the European Union and support for war-torn Ukraine.
The head of the Polish government also met with Polonia organisations in Chisinau. In the Moldovan capital, he also commemorated the late Polish President Lech Kaczyński. He laid a floral tribute at his commemorative plaque in the Polish Library. The plaque was unveiled in 2010 thanks to a decision by the then Chisinau City Council.
