03.09.2023
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in the solemn commemoration of the 43rd anniversary of the signing of the Jastrzębie Agreement. The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the events of August 1980. The situations that took place then were a struggle for a solidary, free and equal Poland. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also announced the government's support for the construction of a memorial pavilion for the Jastrzębie Agreements. Our government supports miners and the mining industry.
Support for mining
We are devoting massive resources to a fair industrial transformation and energy transition. Our government cares about miners. We recognise that the energy transition activities of the mining and energy industries require our special attention.
“We are allocating billions of zlotys from the Polish state budget for a more equitable transformation of the industry, encompassing an energy transformation in the broadest sense of the term," stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Memorial Pavilion of the Jastrzębie Agreements
We should cherish the memory of the events of August 1980. It is a highly significant part of our history that had a profound impact on present-day Poland. This is why we are determined to expedite the creation of the Jastrzębie Agreement memorial pavilion. Our government is committed to supporting this project. We will cherish the memory of the courage of the Silesian miners and the greatness of those events.
“The Polish government will contribute to the establishment of this significant memorial centre, dedicated to the remembrance of those days and the Jastrzębie Agreements," said the Prime Minister.
Anniversary of the signing of the Jastrzębie Agreement
The Jastrzębie Agreement was signed on 3 September 1980. One of its achievements was securing free Saturdays for the majority of Polish workers.
"It is our government that serves as the custodian of the ideals of Solidarity. We are the ones striving to implement these ideals, starting from the great revolution of social dignity - from social policies, which are encapsulated in our actions: the 500+ programme, in the starter kit, the 13th and 14th pensions, tax-free pensions, and many other major social programmes," emphasised the head of the government.
The Jastrzębie Agreement was a complement to the August Agreements concluded in 1980 between the communist authorities and striking workers in Szczecin and Gdańsk.
The Strike Committee in the "July Manifesto" Coal Mine joined its own demands regarding wages, socio-economic conditions, as well as management and work organisation to the demands put forward by the crews of the striking plants on the Coast. Among these, which were accepted by the Polish People’s Republic government and recorded in the protocol, we can mention:
- increasing wages in strict relation to the cost of living,
- introducing free Saturdays and Sundays,
- establishing a minimum and maximum wage limit,
- lowering the retirement age for underground workers.
