Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki talked on the phone with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government

18.11.2021

On 18 November, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had two important conversations over the phone: with the Prime Minister of the Republic if Iraq, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, and with the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani. Their main topic was the situation at the border between Poland and Belarus, where migrants who came from, among others, Iraq and, in larger numbers, the Kurdistan Region, are camped on the Belarusian side.

The Prime Ministers declared that they will cooperate with Poland

The Prime Minister of Iraq promised to provide all assistance and cooperation necessary to bring Iraqi citizens back to their country. This will also apply to those who are being held at the accommodation centres in Poland after crossing the border illegally. He also stated that direct flights from Iraq to Minsk will remain halted. Prime Minister al-Khadimi expressed his solidarity with Poland and assured that Iraq will take all possible steps to bring its citizens back to their country.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government also offered his cooperation. During the talk, he stressed that people who found themselves at the borders of the European Union are victims of smugglers. Organised criminal groups are taking advantage of the situation for their own benefit, thus tarnishing the good name of Kurdistan.

Poland offers humanitarian aid for migrants

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki assured that Poland had offered humanitarian aid for migrants on the Belarusian side many times. We had also talked about this with EU institutions. However, the Belarusian regime had not agreed for humanitarian transports to enter its territory.

Political crisis caused by the Belarusian regime

Since June 2021, the Belarusian authorities have been conducting actions which could be categorised as a hybrid war against the European Union. Illegal migration supported by Belarusian services is meant to destabilise the political situation and threaten the security of Poland and the European Union.

The repeated attempts to violate territorial integrity and the provocations of Belarusian services are meant to deepen the migration crisis created by the Minsk regime. The efforts to achieve this by taking advantage of the dramatic situation of residents of such regions as the Middle East are an element of a cruel and cynical political game played by the Belarusian dictator. Transports organised by the Belarusian regime carrying people from these regions are constantly flowing into Minsk, from where they are brought to the border with Poland and the European Union.
