Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: the Union's priority should be the security of states
05.07.2023
A meeting between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took place at the Royal Baths Park in Warsaw. The conversation focused on security in Europe. The issue of protecting the external borders of the European Union is a priority for Poland and Italy. The heads of government also discussed economic cooperation between our countries and bilateral cooperation. Our countries share a common vision of the future of the European Union.
Security issues
On the eve of the Vilnius NATO summit, politicians also discussed security in the broadest sense. Our countries have ongoing political consultations in this area and exchange experiences.
“A NATO summit will soon be held in Vilnius. There, Poland and Italy also have very similar - not to say identical - positions on giving Ukraine the strongest possible security guarantees,” said the Prime Minister.
Protection of the external borders of the European Union
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is in constant contact with European leaders. On 24 June 2023, the head of the Polish government and the Prime Minister of Italy consulted by telephone about recent events in the Russian Federation, which were related to the so-called Wagner Group. It is important to protect the border with Belarus, as Wagner's men pose a potential threat to security on the European Union's eastern border.
“The Italian Prime Minister understands our challenges in this regard perfectly. Particularly when new threats appear on the horizon, we cannot afford a geopolitical slumber, but must jointly, together strengthen our external borders,” stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Our countries have the longest external borders of the European Union. Italy by sea from the Mediterranean, and Poland by land from the Kaliningrad Oblast with Russia, and further with Belarus and Ukraine. Poland understands the Italian position to have the external borders protected as much as possible.
“The tightening of external borders is a fundamental issue for us. That is why Poland does not agree to illegal immigration. Nor do we agree to any penalties being imposed on us for not accepting illegal migrants,” said the Prime Minister.
Economic cooperation between Poland and Italy
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also discussed bilateral cooperation between our countries and economic topics at their meeting in Warsaw. Trade between our countries is flourishing all the time. We want both Polish and Italian entrepreneurs to be able to grow freely in the European market.
“We also talked about Polish-Italian cooperation. As long as solidarity is the glue that holds us together, I believe we are stronger together in Europe and we will pursue our goals very efficiently,” stressed the Polish Prime Minister.
A common vision for Europe
The Prime Ministers of Poland and Italy also discussed the current EU agenda. After his meeting with the Italian Prime Minister, the Polish Prime Minister stressed that our countries have a similar vision of the future of the European Union. The political cooperation between our countries is strong and builds the potential for joint solutions to the challenges facing the Community. The head of the Polish government stressed that our countries have a lot in common.
“Our countries have a very similar vision for the development of our continent – the current issues. I have to say that I am very happy about that, because during the discussions at the European Councils, sometimes we will look at each other and we know that we think the same thing, that we think about Europe in a similar way,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
