Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited Kyiv on the anniversary of Russia's attack on Ukraine

24.02.2023

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met President Volodymyr Zelenski and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Kyiv. The head of the Polish government handed over the first Leopard tanks to Ukraine. The regular purchase of modern equipment for the Polish army makes it possible to support our neighbour militarily. The visit of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to Kyiv is a clear signal of further actions to defend Ukraine. Poland consistently supports activities for the security of Ukraine and Europe.

- Kyiv is the capital of freedom today. It is the easternmost fortress of the whole Europe, of the whole free Europe. No nation has to demonstrate that it belongs to European civilisation but today, after 365 days, everyone can see that Ukraine and Kyiv are the heart of European civilisation and European values – pointed out Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Heroic defenders of Ukraine and Europe

The heads of the Polish and Ukrainian governments laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance of the Fallen for Ukraine. Prime Minister Morawiecki and President Zelenski visited soldiers at the hospital who had been at the front and had fought for the freedom of not only Ukraine but the whole Europe. The head of the Polish government also met the personnel of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Kyiv and thanked them for their work over the past year.

- I am here to pay tribute to all the fighting heroes of Ukraine, the Ukrainian people, who are defending their homeland and who are also defending Europe and Poland at the same time – stressed Prime Minister Morawiecki.

Poland and Europe stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine

Already on 15 March 2022, Prime Minister Morawiecki and Deputy Prime Minister Kaczyński travelled to Kyiv together with Prime Ministers of the Czech Republic and Slovenia. They wanted to show that Ukraine was not left alone. Since the very first moments of Russia's attack on Ukraine, Poland has been actively supporting its neighbour. The support was also offered before the war.

- Poland and Europe stand shoulder to shoulder with you. The whole West, the whole free world strongly supports you. We will support Ukraine until there is a positive end to this war, until victory over Russia - emphasised the head of the Polish government.

Poland means solidarity

Poland is the leader of support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Morawiecki handed over the first Leopard tanks to the eastern neighbour. Together with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mareusz Morawiecki met soldiers who collected the new armaments. Our goal is the security of Ukraine, which means the security of the whole of Europe. At the same time, further deliveries and orders of modern equipment for the Polish army are organised.

The support for Ukraine also has a diplomatic and humanitarian dimension. The head of the Polish government is active on the international arena to secure further deliveries of armament to Ukraine. A joint coalition for the supply of modern military equipment, including tanks, was a topic that the head of the Polish Government raised during the recent meetings with the Prime Ministers of Denmark and Finland or the Chancellor of Germany, inter alia.

Only a properly equipped Ukrainian army can face the Russian invaders and thus ensure the security of its country and this part of Europe.

Poland has shown its support

The head of the Polish government addressed the Ukrainian men and women directly, emphasising that they were not alone. Poland supports its neighbour. Many people who fled the war have found refuge in our country.

- I also bring greetings from all Ukrainian women and children who are safe in Poland. I can assure you, dear Ukrainian soldiers, that they are in good hands there. As soon as your country is safe, they will be able to go back. We will do everything so that the families can reunite, and today, they feel at home in Poland – declared Prime Minister Morawiecki.

The day of freedom will come

The head of the Polish government stressed that, last year, we all woke up to the nightmare that Russia had prepared for Ukraine. The Prime Minister stressed that he believed that the day would come when we would open our eyes and Ukraine would be free, sovereign, territorially integral and secure once again. We believe that our neighbour will fulfil its European aspirations - Poland supports Ukraine in becoming a member of the European Union.

- There will also come a day when Ukraine will be part of the European Union and, I strongly believe, also part of NATO. There will come a day when, instead of fighting, we will rebuild Europe, in particular Ukraine - said the Polish Prime Minister - After a year of war, I can say one thing: we are 365 days closer to final victory.
