Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki: we are allocating funds to restore the flow of the Oder River

17.07.2022

The government is focusing on the development of inland navigation. After years of neglect and underfunding, this sector became part of a long-term state policy. Today, we are adjusting Poland's position in terms of the full use of all modes of transport to be level with that of other European countries. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the currently modernised lock and control room at the Januszkowice water barrage on the Oder River. The investment, to which we are allocating PLN 200 million, serves to ensure stable and secure conditions for navigation on the Oder Waterway.

Development of inland navigation on the Oder River

“The investment in Januszkowice will support the economy, improve safety and ecology,” – noted Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. “Support the economy because water transport is the cheapest and most environmentally friendly. We also help to protect the environment by reducing transport on Polish roads,” explained the head of government.

As the Prime Minister emphasised, the government will allocate PLN 200 million for the investment in Januszkowice. Meanwhile, the investments concerning restoring the flow of the Oder River throughout the entire Opole region will engage PLN 750 million.

Inland navigation should be an alternative mode of transport, especially in transport corridors which have direct access to seaports. This has become all the more relevant in the current geopolitical situation. Currently, key investments are being implemented on inland waterways. New modernised facilities and cleared river sections are gradually handed-over to operation.

The investment in Januszkowice serves to ensure stable and secure conditions for navigation on the Oder Waterway. The value of the project is approx. PLN 200 million. Completion of the investment is scheduled for July 2023.

The modernisation of the lock and control room at the Januszkowice water barrage will ensure the safety of vessels crossing the Oder River and protect the residents of the Opole region in case of flooding. An efficient and reliable infrastructure will allow a rapid response in the event of possible water surges.
