Prime Minister: Our senior citizens have been mistreated for years. We do everything we can to fix it step by step
06.04.2022
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki met the senior citizens at the "Senior+" Day Care Centre in Wola Karczewska. Financial support and social activation of seniors are an important part of the government's extensive pro-family policy. This year alone, there has been the greatest indexation of pensions in years, the payment of 13th and 14th pensions have been organised, and the "Senior+" and "Aktywni +" programmes supporting intergenerational integration and activities for seniors have been continued
Financial security for senior citizens - 13th and 14th pensions
Taking care of the financial security of senior citizens is our common duty. A well-managed state budget makes it possible to ensure a dignified autumn of life for them.
- Thanks to the fact that we have managed to fix the state budget, which had as many holes as a colander, that we have tightened up taxes, which were going abroad - to the East and to the West, we are now able to give that money to you - said the Prime Minister.
As of 1 March, pensions have increased by 7%. This is much more than the indexation rate shows. We are also raising the minimum pension on a regular basis.
Since the beginning of April, we have started paying the 13th pension.
The additional benefit is paid in the amount of the minimum pension, which is PLN 1,338.44 gross this year, and is higher by PLN 87.56 compared to 2021. A total of approximately 9.7 million senior citizens will receive it. As a result, approximately PLN 47.8 billion will go to pensioners and disability pensioners (in the period from 2019 to 2022). Those are concrete actions thanks to which the living standard of our seniors is getting better.
- For us, the most important spendings are on those who need it most. Today, I also want to say that not only the 13th pension will be delivered to you soon but also the 14th pension will be paid in the second half of this year - announced the head of government.
Thanks to the provisions of the Polish Deal (Polski Ład), pensioners receiving benefits of up to PLN 2,500 will not pay tax from this year. Those who receive higher benefits will pay tax only on the amount exceeding PLN 2,500.
Seniors also benefit from many solutions of the Government Anti-inflation Shield: the shield allowance, reduction of VAT on foodstuffs to 0%, reductions in petrol prices, as well as changes in gas, energy and heat prices.
More than 1,100 senior citizen activity centres
Thanks to the government’s actions, local governments receive funds to support social activation of senior citizens. Senior citizens' homes, clubs and other undertakings allow the oldest Poles to spend their time actively.
Until recently, before 2015, there were just over 100 such facilities across the country. Today, there are more than 1,100 day centres in Poland, such as the "Senior+" Day Care Centre in Wola Karczewska.
The "Senior+" programme for 2021-2025 is a continuation of the long-term "Senior+" programme launched in 2015. It assumes financial support for local self-government units in increasing the active participation of seniors in social life.
During his visit, the head of the Polish government addressed the senior citizens directly - I am sure that all Polish persons are grateful to you - for your experience, for your goodness, for the great results of your work that you - after the war and later on, in the time of the Polish People’s Republic and in the time of free Poland - passed over to us.
