Prime Minister participated in a video conference with President of the European Council
04.11.2022
The head of the Polish government took part in a coordination meeting in the form of a video conference with the President of the European Council and leaders of selected European Union countries. This is the stage of preparation and arrangements ahead of the informal meeting of EU heads of state and government, scheduled for early October. Topics of discussion included the increase in energy prices in the EU, the situation in Ukraine in the context of Russia's actions, and economic issues. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also addressed works on the 8th package of sanctions against Russia.
Further support for Ukraine
The leaders discussed the EU's continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's escalation efforts: the illegal annexation of more occupied Ukrainian territories based on the results of pseudo-referendums, the announcement of partial mobilization, and the intensification of threats to use nuclear weapons.
On 30 September, members of the European Council issued a statement in response to Russia's illegal annexation of Ukrainian regions. Illegal referendums were held in the Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine's Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk regions on 23-27 September.
Increase in energy prices
During the call, leaders discussed further guidelines in response to the increase in prices. They noted the role of unity in the EU and further coordination of policies. High energy prices must be countered by regulatory action at the European Union level. Russia's manipulation of gas prices and Moscow's aggression against Ukraine show that the European Union's existing energy policy model must be restructured.
Poland advocates reform of the EU ETS. Solutions to lower energy prices must be adopted as soon as possible. We are open to solidarity and discussion of the proposed solutions. The key, however, is the principle of voluntariness, not forced restrictions. Energy security, or shaping the energy mix, is a sovereign decision of member states. Among other issues, the talks also addressed the sabotage of Nord Stream 1 and 2.
