Prime Minister: The bridge in Tczew is a symbol of Poland’s development

02.07.2022

On Saturday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki paid a visit to Tczew. This town will rebuild an 18th-century bridge destroyed during the Second World War. The district of Tczew will receive more than PLN 60 million from the Government’s Strategic Investment Programme to restore the historic river crossing. The town will also establish a branch of the Gdańsk-based Museum of the Second World War.

Historic bridge in Tczew

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited the Pomeranian town of Tczew, which lost one of its most important crossings over the Vistula at the outbreak of the Second World War. “The bridge in Tczew is one of Poland’s unique landmarks. It was once the longest bridge in Europe, an engineering masterpiece of its time. Later expanded, it testified to the size and wealth of the area,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed. “Then, during the Second World War, it was very severely damaged. Later, a few dozen years ago, it was put out of use. This is also a symbol of sorts of the ongoing degradation and decapitalisation of some part of Poland’s wealth,” he added.

Rebuilding the Gothic crossing over the Vistula

To date, it has not been possible to rebuild the 18th bridge. Several years ago, work was halted. Today, as announced, the district of Tczew will receive funds from the Government’s Strategic Investment Programme for reconstructing the Gothic river crossing. This is more than PLN 60 million for construction work to restore the historic infrastructure. The bridge will be rebuilt to reflect its original splendour. Both the characteristic towers and the details of this Vistula bridge will be recreated.

“We are transferring the first tranche of more than PLN 60 million from the Government’s Strategic Investment Programme for the execution of renovation and repair works on the bridge in Tczew,” the Polish PM said. “This engineering masterpiece will regain its lustre,” he added.

Branch of the Museum of the Second World War in Tczew

The Gdańsk Museum of the Second World War will have a branch in the Kociewie region. “There will also be a museum here to show the history of this area,” announced the Prime Minister. “This will indeed be a place worth visiting by all Poles and tourists, people interested in history from abroad,” he added.

This facility will be located by the Gothic bridge in Tczew. It will house exhibitions on historic river crossings and the region.
