31.08.2024

On the 44th anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements, Prime Minister Donald Tusk participated in Gdańsk in the solemn unveiling of a monument to the late Lech Bądkowski - a Polish and Kashubian writer, journalist, and political, cultural, and social activist. The head of the government described Lech Bądkowski as a master of patriotism, without whom there would be no "Solidarity" and no independent Poland.

A Cool Mind with a Warm Heart

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was a friend of Lech Bądkowski, emphasized that he was an extremely pragmatic man, deeply dedicated to the matters of Pomerania and Kashubia.

"Lech Bądkowski said that common sense should always be put before ideology. To be able to differentiate courage from recklessness,"
– the Prime Minister recalled.

He added that Lech Bądkowski was a unique figure and an exceptional patriot, who throughout his life was faithful to the principle that obliges those responsible for public affairs to act courageously, but with prudence.

Donald Tusk noted that thanks to Lech Bądkowski, he learned the skill of combining values such as responsibility, pragmatism, and decisiveness in public life.

Hope is More Important than Certainty

The head of the government recalled that during the martial law in the Polish People's Republic, Lech Bądkowski repeated the words: "Hope is more important than certainty. Have hope - following hope will come the certainty that there will be democracy, freedom, and independence."

"There would be no “Solidarity”, no independent Poland, no peaceful and very responsible process of building a new Poland, if not for Lech Bądkowski […]. No one realizes how much today's Poland owes to this cool mind and simultaneously warm heart,"
– said the Prime Minister.

He concluded that there was no better master of patriotism than Lech Bądkowski.

Lech Bądkowski - Monument

The monument, unveiled at the intersection of Świętojańska and Minogi streets, is the work of Maciej and Aneta Jagodziński-Jagenmeer. It portrays Bądkowski with the book "Pomeranian Political Thought," to remind of his intellectual contribution to the development of democratic thought in Poland.

Lech Bądkowski was a master of patriotism, and his activity, both literary and political, was the essence of freedom and responsibility. Born on January 24, 1920, in Toruń, he dedicated his life to serving his homeland, both on the battlefield and through his writing and social activities. His contribution to the creation of a free Poland is invaluable, as evidenced by his role in the negotiations of the Gdańsk Agreements and editing the first "Solidarity" newspaper - "Samorządność".

He died on February 24, 1984, in Gdańsk. His funeral became a manifestation of opposition against the government of the Polish People's Republic.

The ceremony ended with the symbolic laying of white roses at the monument by the Bądkowski family and representatives of the authorities, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk. White roses, symbolizing innocence, purity, and peace, remind of the legacy of a man whose stance and actions have forever been inscribed in the history of Poland and the "Solidarity" movement.
