Record European Funds for Silesia – a total of EUR 5.1 billion
07.12.2022
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki gave the good news to Silesia during his visit to Zabrze. The European Commission has approved European Funds for the region for the coming years. Silesia will receive a record amount of EUR 5.1 billion. As much as EUR 2.2 billion of this pool has been allocated for the energy transition from the Just Transition Fund. This is a guarantee of modern and responsible development that will benefit the region's residents, entrepreneurs and local governments.
Transformation of Silesia
Under the European Funds for Silesia programme for the 2021-2027 perspective, the Silesia Province will receive EUR 5.14 billion for the development of the region, including
- EUR 2.09 billion from the European Regional Development Fund,
- 0.83 billion from the European Social Fund+ and
- 2.22 billion from the Just Transition Fund.
These are huge sums that will facilitate further modernisation of Silesia, equal opportunities and the opening of new possibilities for the future.
“I firmly believe that Silesia can be the locomotive of the Polish industry and the Polish economy. But for this locomotive to pick up speed, it must be modernised. It must transform – just as the modern economy is transforming," stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Future lies in responsible and just development
Funding for Silesia allows the implementation of projects in the areas of support, such as:
- climate, environment and energy,
- territorial instruments,
- transport, entrepreneurship,
- infrastructure: educational, social, health as well as
- culture and tourism.
The approved funds will also enable the region's energy and industrial transition projects to be subsidised. Silesia has received the largest allocation from the Just Transition Fund of EUR 2.2 billion, to be used for measures to mitigate the effects of the energy transition. This is the largest single allocation of this fund to a coal region in the entire European Union.
Regional programmes of the European Funds
Regional programmes are among the important sources of support for the implementation of the objectives of the province’s development strategy. This way, we aim to improve the socio-economic situation of the population and the region.
Poland has received a total of EUR 33.5 billion for regional programmes from the European Funds for the period 2021-2027. The corresponding amount in the previous period of 2014-2020 was EUR 31.3 billion.
“This is a record pool of funds for all local government officials, entrepreneurs, all of you who know very well what the transformation process should look like in your cities, your counties, your municipalities," pointed out the Prime Minister.
All 16 regional programmes for Poland for the 2021-2027 perspective have already been approved by the European Commission.
We are creating a financial framework for further investment
Silesia has been the industrial heartland of our country for more than 100 years. It is here that raw materials and technology meet with the creativity and diligence of people. Today we can see that this development is headed towards modernity, and we are securing this direction financially for the coming years – both from European Funds and, above all, from our national budget.
“This is just an outline of a certain financial framework – of what we will be able to implement with investments under the Polish white-and-red flag, but also with the support from EU funds," said Mateusz Morawiecki, Head of the Polish Government.
