The Polish government secures the energy interests of millions of Poles

20.09.2021

The Polish government will not close the KWB Turów mine. From the outset, our position has been that halting work at the Turów mine would threaten the stability of the Polish power system. It would have a negative impact on the energy security of millions of Poles and the entire European Union. Its closure would also mean huge problems for everyday life. The Polish Government is seeking an amicable resolution of the dispute with the Czech Republic and respects the interests of the local community. Today's ruling stands in contrast to this amicable resolution of the issue.

Ensuring the security of energy and the livelihood of Polish families

No decision of the Court of Justice of the EU may affect areas relating to the fundamental security of the Member States. Energy security falls precisely within this area.

The Turów power plant is responsible for up to 7% of the national energy production. It guarantees energy security for millions of people. It supplies electricity to hospitals, schools, households and enterprises. Its stable operation determines the functioning of Polish homes, schools, hospitals and businesses. It also affects the safety, health and lives of millions of Polish families and citizens. The Turów power plant also supplies heat to the town and commune of Bogatynia, where there are no alternative heating sources.

Amicable resolution of the dispute

The financial penalty mentioned by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) is disproportionate to the situation and is not justified by the facts. It undermines the ongoing process of amicable resolution of the issue.

Poland is making every effort to find an amicable resolution to the dispute with the Czech Republic over the operation of KWB Turów. This is best demonstrated by the ongoing discussions with the Czech side aimed at agreeing on a comprehensive framework in the form of an international agreement to assess and monitor the impact of the mine's operation in the region. These discussions were held today as well.
