The Head of the Polish Government has taken part in a coordination meeting in the form of a video conference with the President of the European Council and the leaders of selected European Union countries. This was the preparation and arrangement stage ahead of an informal meeting of EU Heads of State and governments scheduled for early October. The issues discussed during the talks included the increase in energy prices in the EU, the situation in Ukraine following Russia's actions and economic issues. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also raised the subject of working on the 8th package of sanctions against Russia.
Further support for Ukraine
Leaders discussed further EU support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's escalating political and military activity: the illegal annexation of further occupied territories of Ukraine on the basis of the results of pseudo-referendums, the announcement of partial mobilisation and increasingly vocal threats to use nuclear weapons.
On 30 September, the members of the European Council issued a statement in response to Russia's illegal annexation of Ukrainian regions. On 23-27 September, illegal referendums were held in the Russian-occupied parts of the Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.
Increased energy prices
During the talks, the leaders discussed further guidelines in response to the increase in energy prices. They drew attention to the importance of unity in the EU as well as further coordination of policies. High energy prices must be countered by regulatory action at European Union level. Russia's manipulation of gas prices and Moscow's aggression against Ukraine show that the European Union's current energy policy must be remodelled.
Poland is in favour of reforming the EU ETS. Solutions to lower energy prices must be adopted as soon as possible. We are open to solidarity and discussion on the solutions proposed. However, the key to success is the principle of voluntariness, not coercive restrictions. Achieving eergy security or shaping the energy mix is the sovereign decision of member states. The talks also raised other issues such as the sabotage of Nord Stream 1 and 2.
