U.S. and Polish officials continue strategic talks on nuclear, RES and energy sector transformation

The fourth Strategic Dialogue on Energy between the official delegations of the Republic of Poland, led by Piotr Naimski, Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and Plenipotentiary for Strategic Energy Infrastructure and the official delegation of the United States, led by Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of Energy, was held on September 22 in Warsaw. Polish Minister of Climate and Environment, Michał Kurtyka, also took part in the strategic dialogue.

During the meetings at ministerial and sub-ministerial level, representatives of the two countries discussed the opportunities for cooperation in implementing projects in the areas indicated in the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and the Republic of Poland on a U.S.-Poland Strategic Dialogue on Energy, i.e. nuclear energy, fossil energy, energy infrastructure and cybersecurity, signed on November 9, 2018 in Warsaw. In addition, given the challenges of meeting climate targets and achieving the energy transition, the topic of cooperation for the integration of renewable energy sources to the electricity system alongside with storage technology as well as possible join initiatives and exchanges on implementing just transition plans for coal regions both in Poland and the U.S.

An important point of the Dialogue was the importance of nuclear energy in the decarbonization process, including through the implementation of the intergovernmental agreement signed in October 2020 on cooperation to develop the Polish Nuclear Power Program, including discussion of the progress of works on the Concept and Execution Report (CER). Participants in the Dialogue agreed that cooperation on construction of nuclear power plants in Poland will be based on long-term partnership, and will not be limited only to the sale of technology. 

As agreed, the meetings are held alternately in Poland and the United States. The visit of Secretary Granholm is the first visit to Poland by a representative of this rank from the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden.
