V4 Leaders Discuss Closer Cooperation in Europe
23.06.2026
"Everything depends on whether we return to a way of working based on trust and mutual loyalty," said Prime Minister Donald Tusk during the first meeting of the Visegrád Group heads of government in two years. The head of the Polish government stressed that the V4, made up of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, can once again play an important role in shaping the European debate. He also noted that in key areas such as energy, migration, cohesion policy and agriculture, the countries of the region are united by more than divides them.
Cooperation within the Visegrád Group can strengthen the region's influence over the key events and decisions taken in Europe.
“Each of our countries can once again play an important role in shaping events in Europe. This also makes cooperation possible across existing differences, on matters of importance to our countries and to the whole region,” stressed the Prime Minister.
Cooperation within the V4 brings the best results when it rests on mutual trust and on the conviction that one's partners act with good intentions.
“If we always understand that what unites us, regardless of our conflicts, is stronger than what divides us, then Europe will start to listen to us,” said Donald Tusk.
Areas such as energy security, climate policy, migration, cohesion policy and agriculture remain important fields of cooperation between the countries of the region.
“When the V4 was loyal and united, it also offered a light of hope to all the countries of the eastern flank, to all the so-called new members of the European Union. I see no reason why the V4 should not once again be such a signpost for all those who, standing alone, have no chance in a confrontation with Germany, with France, with the Brussels bureaucracy,” summed up the Prime Minister.
The joint efforts of the Visegrád Group countries can strengthen the position of Central and Eastern Europe within the European Union and contribute to a more effective representation of the region's interests on the European stage.
“When the Visegrád Group was like a single fist, we were able not only to influence decisions in Europe but even to impose them,” said the head of the Polish government.
Today's meeting near Budapest is the first formal summit of the Visegrád Group since 2024. The last V4 summit at the level of heads of government took place in February 2024 in Prague.
