Warsaw and Rome Chart a Closer Course

07.05.2026

Prime Minister Donald Tusk met in Rome with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. "Poland and Italy are ready for serious negotiations, which should conclude with a new treaty. Our two countries deserve relations at the highest possible level," the Prime Minister said. Warsaw and Rome are bound by friendship, shared history, and a commitment to the same values. The two countries also share positions on the most important European issues - including the war in Ukraine, the EU Emissions Trading System, and EU funds. Last year Poland signed a treaty deepening cooperation with France, and a similar agreement with the United Kingdom is planned for the end of May.

PM Tusk and PM Meloni

Poland and Italy share common interests, a common vision for Europe, and the same values. The time has come to discuss taking bilateral relations even further.

We are ready to begin serious negotiations, which should conclude with a new treaty. Our two countries deserve relations at the highest possible level. We are bound by history and by shared geopolitical views. The Polish-Italian friendship is very deeply rooted in our history.

— Donald Tusk said.

Warsaw and Rome also hold aligned positions on all key European issues — including the war in Ukraine, the EU Emissions Trading System, and EU funds.

On ETS we will act together — my instinct tells me we will be effective here, as a political duo. On European funds and the future EU financial framework, Poland and Italy have an identical view when it comes to cohesion policy and the common agricultural policy. That makes me look with optimism toward the conclusion of those negotiations.

— the Prime Minister noted.

The joint work of Poland and Italy in support of peace in Ukraine has a very practical dimension.

Our companies and institutions will work together to ensure that support for Ukraine is built up now. We cannot wait for the war to end, because we do not know when it will end. That is why the Ukraine Recovery Conference will also be a conference for Ukraine's security.

— the head of government said.

Giorgia Meloni also highlighted the strength of cooperation between the two countries.

Italy and Poland are the only two countries that mention each other in their national anthems. These very deep ties are also reflected in our economic cooperation. Trade has surpassed a record €36 billion. Warsaw is one of our most important partners. That is why we will continue to strengthen our cooperation and our partnership.

— the Italian Prime Minister announced.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Giorgia Meloni plays an important role in building a Europe grounded in values.

I am committed to the moral foundations of politics, and I know that if there is anyone in Europe who takes exactly the same approach — who believes that morality and truth matter — it is Giorgia Meloni. European politics is a great deal better for her presence.

— Donald Tusk said.

Through Polish-Italian cooperation, the two countries have also succeeded in uniting the majority of EU member states around a realistic and firm policy on border protection, territorial security, and combating illegal immigration.
