We are keeping our word – as of today we have free state motorways
01.07.2023
45 days ago we announced that drivers of cars and motorbikes would be able to use the state motorways free of charge. As of today, this is possible! The roads exempted from tolls are the following: A2 Stryków-Konin and A4 Wrocław-Sośnica. Thanks to our negotiations, the private motorway A1 Gdańsk-Toruń will also be toll-free. Drivers will be able to use it free of charge every weekend - from Friday 12:00 to Monday 12:00, until 4 September. You are going on holiday, running business errands, want to visit family and you are using these sections - you don't have to pay for them anymore. Our government also wants to abolish tolls on more motorways in Poland.
Free motorways for passenger car and motorbike drivers
For our government, the welfare of the people of Poland is crucial. Free motorways is another measure we have taken that helps achieve this goal. It is additional money that stays in the wallets of Polish women and men. It is also roads that are accessible to everyone. The solution will benefit drivers of passenger cars (up to 3.5 tonnes) and motorbikes who use the following motorways:
- A2 Stryków-Konin;
- A4 Wrocław-Sośnica.
In addition, drivers will be able to travel free of charge on the A1 Gdańsk-Toruń private motorway. The toll exemption will apply every weekend - from Friday from 12:00 to Monday until 12:00, until 4 September 2023. The long August weekend is an exception - drivers will be able to enjoy free travel for longer. The toll exemption will apply from Friday 11 August from 12:00 until Wednesday 16 August 2023 until 12:00.
“45 days ago, such a decision was presented - today we are implementing it and we are implementing it beyond what was promised,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Improving safety on Polish roads
Free state motorways also mean safe travel. Citizens will not have to choose between a free local road and a motorway. The natural choice will be the faster road - modern, safe and free.
“Motorways and expressways are about safety, they are about driving comfort, they are about reducing accidents,” stressed the head of government.
This year we have received the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) Road Safety Performance Index (PIN) Award. This is a great distinction and recognition of our efforts to improve safety on Polish roads. The PIN Award is considered the equivalent of an Oscar in road safety.
“We recently received an award from the European Union, as the keeper of such statistics, as the country with the highest level of road safety,” said the Prime Minister.
This is not the only achievement of our government in this area. We are currently the country with the largest decrease in the number of accidents and their victims in Europe. Since 2015, there has been a 35 per cent decrease in the annual number of road accident victims. This has been possible thanks to numerous investments in road infrastructure, such as additional pedestrian crossings or new street lighting.
Government programmes for Polish roads
We are constantly investing in the national and local road network. We know that each completed task means not only the safety of all road users. It is also an improvement in the quality of life of Polish women and men - a comfortable commute to work, a convenient route to school or quick travel for holidays.
Government programmes that help us achieve this are:
- National Road Construction Programme - since 2015, we have commissioned 158 tasks worth PLN 75 billion and over 2,000 km in length for citizens;
- Government Road Construction Fund - in 2019-2022 alone, 12,000 tasks with a total length of more than 18,000 km have been allocated funding. We have spent nearly PLN 13 billion for this purpose.
