Global Education Network Europe (GENE)

Global Education Network Europe (GENE) is a network of public institutions and their subordinate agencies dealing with global education in several dozen European countries.

GENE

It aims to facilitate networking, exchange of views and good practices between global education institutions in the countries belonging to GENE.
Each country is represented by representatives of foreign ministries and/or education ministries and their subordinate agencies.

Poland’s cooperation with GENE

Poland has been present in GENE for over 10 years. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the leading institution, is responsible for the implementation of global education tasks in Poland, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education. Representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Ministry of Environment also participate in the consultations.

The Peer Reviews of Global Education

In 2009, as part of the cooperation with GENE, the Peer Review Process on global education in Poland was conducted. On its basis, the National Report on Global Education in Poland was published in 2010. The document was a summary of the Peer Review of Global Education in Poland prepared by GENE at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. The report highlights the achievements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in creating a strong structure for financing global education activities and recognises the efforts of the Ministry of National Education to increase the presence of global education issues in the general education curriculum. Moreover, the dynamism and involvement of the NGOs in the development of global education in Poland was highly appreciated.

Since then, several Peer Reviews have been conducted in the countries belonging to the network. Poland also participated in the peer review process conducted, for example, in Slovenia and Estonia. Please visit the GENE website to read these documents: https://gene.eu/publications/national-reports/

GENE Roundtables

A permanent element of cooperation within the network are roundtable meetings, which take place twice a year – during spring and autumn sessions. A meeting is usually hosted by a country belonging to the GENE network and regularly by Brussels. Poland hosted the representatives of other countries associated in GENE in spring 2012.

The meetings are an opportunity to present the Country Reports providing information on programme assumptions, funding methods, activities, research, educational programmes and competitions on global education in the network countries. Additionally, the meetings provide their participants with an opportunity to exchange experiences, work in groups and set new directions for action and innovation. Examples of activities carried out in one country serve as valuable guidance for other Member States.

Among various possibilities of supporting global education in the countries associated in the network, we can mention:

  • mechanism of co-funding for global education projects in a Member State by GENE (using EC funds);
  • technical support (for the implementation of global education projects);
  • support in creating a national strategy for the development of global education ;
  • undertaking joint initiatives by several GENE countries (e.g. peer learning)

The most recent network meeting took place in Malta in October 2019. It was attended by more than 70 participants representing 46 institutions from 27 countries. The next GENE Roundtable session combined with the International Conference on Global Education was scheduled for May 2020. However, due to the global COVID-19 epidemic, the event will take place on a different date.
