Polish aid for flood victims in Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco

16.12.2020

The Polish Embassy in Mexico donated nearly 8.5 tonnes of food and hygiene products for people struck by floods in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas, in southeast Mexico. The support was provided thanks to funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of Polish development assistance.

The humanitarian aid was handed over by Ambassador Maciej Ziętara on the premises of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where office space was converted into storerooms for gifts for flood victims. The handing-over ceremony was attended by Executive Director of Mexican Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AMEXCID) Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas and Director-General for Europe Bernardo Aguilar Calvo. The directors thanked the Polish government for this valuable support.

The main goal of the project was to help meet the basic food and health needs of the population affected by the floods that hit the country in early November 2020. As a result of torrential downpours, over 30 people died and nearly 300,000 lost their homes and all belongings. About 280 temporary shelters were opened for flood victims. However, the victims lacked everything, particularly drinking water, food, and clothes. It is estimated that the food parcels the Polish Embassy purchased in Mexico – according to the list of necessary food products that was prepared by the Mexican MFA – will help feed for seven days over 1,000 people staying in shelters set up by the local authorities and the army. The beneficiaries of the assistance are local communities affected by the flood, predominantly women and children.
