The goal of the United Nations is to ensure international peace and security, to develop cooperation between nations, and to promote the observance of human rights. The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently, it consists of 193 UN member states and its work is guided by the goals and principles contained in its founding charter. The organization has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world. The first peacekeeping operations, very limited in terms of the scope of the mandate and the number of personnel involved, gradually evolved into complex operations performed by thousands of personnel.
