Zambia

Diplomatic relations between Poland and Zambia were established in June 1966

Political cooperation

Poland recognized independent Zambia in April  1965. Diplomatic relations were established in June 1966. A Polish trade center operated in Lusaka in 1967-1970. Polish ambassadors based in Dar es Salaam were accredited to Zambia in the period of 1970-1990. Until the closure of the diplomatic mission in Harare in 2008, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Zimbabwe was responsible for the Polish interests in Zambia. Currently, matters related to Polish-Zambian relations are within the competence of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria. Since 1992, the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Poland (currently Consulate General of the Republic of Poland) has been operating in Lusaka, run by honorary consul Maria Wiśniewska-Ogonowska. The last accreditation of the Ambassador of the Republic of Zambia to Poland took place in December 2005. From the Zambian side the following visits to Poland were submitted by: the Minister of Planning and Development (1977); delegation of the National Assembly (1984); and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1987). From the Polish side the following visits to Zambia were submitted by: the delegation of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (1985) and undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, S. Szymański, who was received, among others, by President F. Chiluba (1995). The official visit of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland Donald Tusk took place in October 2013.

Economic cooperation

The first trade agreement between Poland and Zambia was signed In 1967. Due to increased interest in the development of Polish-Zambian cooperation, especially in the area of establishing joint ventures, Poland signed an agreement with Zambia on the avoidance of double taxation in 1995.  During the Poland – Zambia Business Forum in Lusaka, which took place on October 2013 during the official visit of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Memorandum of Understanding between Izodom (a manufacturer of building materials for energy-efficient houses) and two Zambian companies - GladRich Investments Limited (developer) and Alinaswe Developments (an architectural company) were signed. When planning to launch a local Izodom construction elements plant, the companies decided to pilot a construction of 20 houses in the suburbs of Lusaka. The value of the pilot project is USD 500,000, the target value of projects - factories and construction of housing estates was USD 5.5 million. The official visit of Prime Minister Donald Tusk to Zambia was accompanied by several dozen representatives of Polish businessmen who were interested in expanding into African markets. The Polish entrepreneurs represented mining, transport, defense, furniture and construction industries. The Economic Forum was an opportunity to talk and establish business contacts. The trade turnover between Poland and Zambia has been significantly increased since Poland's accession to the European Union. Despite this, the scale of trade with Zambia and inventory fluctuations clearly indicate the ad hoc nature of transactions. In 2017 the trade turnover between Poland and Zambia amounted to USD 5.0 million (Polish exports to Zambia amounted to USD 4.4 million and imports only USD 0.6 million).
