The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria cordially invites you to the book launch of "A Pole under the Southern Cross: Antoni Rehman's Journey through South Africa, 1875-1877," which will take place in Cape Town on 26 November 2025 at The Athenaeum, Newlands in Cape Town. The event is organized by the Historical Publications South Africa (HiPSA). The project was co-financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
Professor Michał Leśniewski and Dr. Weronika Muller, authors of the English translation, will present A. Rehman's work during the book launch event. The original Polish version was published in 1881, making it the first full-length book on South Africa published in Polish. Rehman's volume richly describes his encounters during his travels across the subcontinent at a turning point in African history, politically, economically, ecologically, and zoologically. Furthermore, the volume includes contemporary photographs of some of the plants and cultural objects that A. Rehman brought with him to Europe, where they are now housed in herbaria and museums in Poland, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
Dr. Weronika Muller is one of the founders of the Polish Success Club in South Africa (Polski Klub Sukcesu w Południowej Afryce).
