06.05.2021

On the occasion of the 230th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of 3 May, TVP (Polish TV channel) presented a full-length documentary entitled "May the 3rd, That is today" directed by Cyprian Demianiuk.

Constitution of 3 May – painting by Jan Matejko (1838–1893)

The film presents the events of the late 18th century to answer the question why one of the first modern constitutions in the world was created then. The scenes for the film were shot in Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Germany. The atmosphere of those years was intensified by historical costumes and palace interiors.

- This is a film about the Constitution of 3 May as a document, but also about historical, social and economic processes that contributed to the international success and the success of the reform that came with it - said the script writer Piotr Kornobis in a special edition of the program "Trójkowo, filmowo".

The history of the first constitution in Europe is a story about the courage and vision of politicians from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, whose work has resulted in something more lasting than a military victory. The developed document of the Constitution of 3 May, during the year of its execution, gained the support of the Crown and Lithuania. Its content touched on real problems and contained negotiated solutions. The document, later called "the last will and testament of the dying Motherland", became an important element of the identity of the nations that grew out of the tradition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The premiere of the film took place on May 3, 2021 simultaneously in Poland and Lithuania.
