Father Bogdan Wilkaniec SChr ended his ministry in South Africa
17.05.2022
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria hosted a solemn farewell to Father Bogdan Wilkaniec, who served as a priest in South Africa in the years 1999 - 2022. The meeting was attended by the Polish Ambassador to South Africa, Andrzej Kanthak, and the Consul of the Republic of Poland, Michał Gierwatowski.
Until 1983, Polish priests in South Africa were diocesan priests, and a year later the priests of the Society of Christ for Polish Immigrants took over. The nature of work on the African continent is unique. Priests are hundreds of kilometers apart, which makes it impossible to meet and stay in the community frequently. Priests work in local parishes, serving Catholics of various origins residing within Polish parishes (Afrikaners, Portuguese, English, Croats, Africans from many countries: Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Gabon). Working with a community of such national diversity requires openness, mediation skills, understanding and good organization.
Father Bogdan wrote in golden letters in the memory and hearts of not only the Polish community, but all parishioners participating in weekly masses, and all those who had the pleasure of meeting this exceptional priest. Father Bogdan contributed significantly to the integration of the Polish community. Thanks to his efforts, the local Polish community was able to cultivate culture, language and traditions. Also South African citizens, local parishioners who were unfamiliar with Polish customs, participated for the first time in the feast and procession of Corpus Christi organized by Poles. Common ceremonies organized in the parish hall introduced the Polish tradition and culture to the South African community. An enriching element, both for English-speaking parishioners and Poles, were the Paschal Suppers, where one could hear Polish religious songs and Polish liturgical reading, as well as blessing food on Holy Saturday. Together with the Union of Polish Associations operating in Pretoria, a Polish-English library was established, and St. Nicholas Day, Christmas carols and sports competitions were organized.
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria organized a number of cultural events in cooperation with Father Bogdan and the parish of Saint John Fisher. One of them was the organization of an exhibition devoted to the life and activities of John Paul II.
Thank you very much for many years of pastoral care in the mother tongue, dedication, kindness and selflessness. We will all miss You, Father Bogdan, very much.
