The event is organized annually by the Delegation of the European Union, EUNIC, and the embassies and cultural institutes of EU member states. In recent years, non-EU countries, such as the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Georgia, have also participated in the festival. Films were screened in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The theme of this year's festival was "celebrating love and identity."

This year, Poland presented the film "Under the Volcano," directed by Damian Kocur. The film generated considerable interest and attracted a large audience. The event aims to promote knowledge about Poland, increase our country's recognition and visibility in South African media, and provide opportunities for international dissemination of Polish cinema, outstanding filmmakers, and arthouse cinema.

The European Film Festival 2025 is a partnership project between the European Union Delegation to South Africa and 10 European embassies and cultural agencies in South Africa: Denmark, Flanders, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. The festival is organized in collaboration with Cineuropa, Bioscope, NuMetro Hyde Park, and The Labia, and is coordinated by Encounters South Africa.
