Premiere of the Polish film "Under the Volcano" in Pretoria, South Africa
29.05.2025
The premiere of the Polish film "Under the Volcano" directed by Damian Kocur took place in Pretoria on 29 May 2025.
The screening was organized by the Delegation of the European Union in Pretoria in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Pretoria and the Embassy of Ukraine in Pretoria. The occasional speech was delivered by the EU Ambassador Sandra Kramer, the Ambassador of Ukraine Liubov Abravitova and Chargé d’Affaires Jacek Chodorowicz. In his speech, the head of the Polish mission referred to the Russian aggression against Ukraine and emphasized Poland's commitment to helping Ukraine, especially in the face of the mass influx of war refugees in the first weeks after 24 February 2022.
"Under the Volcano" is an insightful portrayal of the emotional state of the young, intelligent Ukrainian family Kowalenko, who are caught by the outbreak of war on the last day of their vacation in Tenerife. Their return to Kiev turns out to be impossible. In an instant, they go from tourists to refugees. It is also a story about what a young person goes through when their world suddenly changes. Fear, longing and hope appear. A film by Damian Kocur, which shows that even in the most difficult moments we can find the strength to survive.
After the film was presented, the participants of the event could discuss the film.
