Seminar on “Multilateralism in an Increasingly Contested Global Order”
23.04.2024
A seminar on “Multilateralism in an Increasingly Contested Global Order” was held on 23 April 2024, in Pretoria. The event was organized by the South African think tank SAIIA (The South African Institute of International Affairs), in cooperation with DIRCO and the Delegation of the European Union.
The seminar was attended by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of South Africa, Alvin Botes, Polish expert from PISM, Maria Piechowska, and Sandra Kramer, EU Ambassador to South Africa. Ambassador Adam Burakowski participated in the event. The subject of the seminar was a discussion on Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
The most important conclusions from the discussion on Russian aggression against Ukraine in South Africa: Experts in South Africa are divided on the war in Ukraine, some understand, some (fewer) talk about peace at all costs, as a universal value, without reflecting on what it would mean for Ukraine; Russia's colonial policy towards Ukraine, the kidnapping of children - these are arguments that convince the side to some extent; The issue of Ukraine's subjectivity turned out to be an important element in the discussion, especially in the context of the fight for a zone of influence.
