05.06.2019

The Ministry of Digital Affairs is set to organise the 2020 Internet Governance Forum (IGF) - an international meeting enabling global discussion on the development of the internet. The IGF is an initiative of the United Nations, which brings together government representatives, entrepreneurs, representatives of academia and NGOs from all over the world.

The Forum covers a wide variety of issues concerning the functioning and governance of the internet – legal, economic and social. Among the topics raised during the debates are digital data-based economy, artificial intelligence, innovative technologies and their impact on the economy and society, digital competencies, rights and freedoms on the Internet, security, and many others.

“The fact that we are going to host several thousand of the most important people in the world, dealing with the issues related to the functioning of the internet, freedom of on-line speech, all the problems, as well as the benefits that the internet brings with it is a great honour for Poland,” claims Marek Zagórski, Minister of Digital Affairs. “It is a proof of recognition for the efforts of Poland, for our activity in this area and also for the forums that we have been organising jointly with NASK for several years now,” he adds.

Poland has been organising a national IGF since 2016, presenting the Polish perspective. The adopted conclusions and recommendations are then presented during the international forum.

The Internet Governance Forum takes place once a year and lasts several days. It brings together several thousand participants. This year's IGF will be held in Berlin. Last year's was in Paris. It was inaugurated by President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
