Local government units

Local government units play a special role in Polish development cooperation. Engaging in initiatives to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals, they not only contribute to the socio-economic growth of their partner countries, but also raise the global awareness of their own communities as well as influence the process of overcoming barriers and biases.

Polish local government units, with their vast experience in building self-governance, managing social services, or supporting civil society, are irreplaceable partners to cooperate with countries which are implementing socio-economic reforms. Since 2006, local authorities have gained much social trust on the international arena through carrying out projects under Polish development assistance.

Local government units can take part in calls for proposals organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initiatives they carry out are mainly aimed at supporting good governance in the priority countries of Polish development cooperation. The submitted applications most often refer to growing competences of the local authorities in managing social services and ensuring public safety.
