Multilateral development banks

One of the most crucial dimensions of development cooperation conducted through multilateral institutions is involvement in the initiatives of international development banks. It enhances and complements our bilateral activities carried out under Polish Aid.

The mandates of multilateral development banks not only allow of allocating donors’ public funds, but also of mobilising private capital. This, in turn, facilitates the implementation of joint large-scale development investments which boost economic growth, create new jobs, and thus limit poverty in developing countries.

Cooperation with development banks provides Poland with opportunities for long-term financing of mainly infrastructure and environmental projects which are indispensable for sustainable development of our partners.  Development banks have many years’ experience in implementing high-tech projects.

They also serve as an instrument to use innovation in development cooperation, also with regard to financial innovations such as blending and guarantees. Additionally, cooperation with development banks creates opportunities to engage the Polish private sector in development cooperation through participation in international tenders organised by these banks.

Poland actively participates in the activities of the World Bank Group, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development as their shareholder, and by making contributions to trust funds which fulfil mandates defined by donors. However, it does not exhaust the list of development banks which are Poland’s partners.

The key aspects of cooperation include infrastructure investments, as well as those supporting low-carbon economy, environmental protection, counteracting and adapting to climate change, and energy security of developing countries.
