The agenda for the spring meeting of the Western European Nuclear Regulators' Association (WENRA) included issues of significance to the Polish nuclear regulatory authority in the context of nuclear safety in the region and the ongoing review of the application for a construction license for Poland's first nuclear power plant. A delegation of the PAA led by Andrzej Głowacki, President of the PAA, took part in the discussions.

This year's first issue of the quarterly is largely dedicated to Poland's preparations for the development of nuclear energy and the related regulatory and scientific challenges.

Nearly 100 participants from around the world are taking part in workshops organized by the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and the World Nuclear Association (WNA). The event is being hosted by the National Atomic Energy Agency. At the PAA headquarters, an international group of experts from the nuclear sector is discussing the challenges and ways to streamline the nuclear power plant licensing process.

On March 31, the Polish Nuclear Power Plants company submitted an application to the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency for a license to construct a nuclear power plant.

A delegation from the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) attended the plenary meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulatory Group (ENSREG) in Brussels. Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the PAA, and Iga Pocztarek-Tofil, Director of the PAA Policy and International Cooperation Bureau, participated in the meeting.

- We are an institution with over 40 years of experience, including in the oversight of nuclear facilities. We have a research reactor in Poland, which is regularly inspected by the National Atomic Energy Agency - said Andrzej Głowacki, President of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA), during this year's Baltic Nuclear Energy Forum in Gdańsk. As President Głowacki pointed out, overseeing a large-scale nuclear power plant will be a major new task for the Agency, one for which the PAA has been preparing for many years. The nuclear safety of society and the environment is crucial in oversight.

Experts from the National Atomic Energy Agency held their second open meeting with residents of the Choczewo commune in Słajszewo. This is the commune where the first nuclear power plant in Poland is planned to be built.

A responsible nuclear energy program must include preparation for radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management. Preparation for this waste management is a fundamental element that should be implemented in parallel with the nuclear energy program, said Paweł Pytlarczyk, Vice President of the National Atomic Energy Agency, during the ARTEMIS mission summary.
