On 30 June 2025, Poland's six-month Presidency of the Council of the EU came to an end. During this period, Poland actively shaped the EU's policy in the field of development cooperation and humanitarian aid. What were the most important events and achievements of the six months of the Polish Presidency? Let's dive in.

The fourth edition of the European Humanitarian Forum was held in Brussels on 19-20 May 2025. The event was jointly hosted by Poland, currently holding the Presidency of the EU Council, and the European Commission.

The EU Directors-General for Development and Humanitarian Aid met in Warsaw on 8-9 April 2025. Among the main topics were the challenges associated with development cooperation in the context of supporting fragile countries and building resilience, as well as the implementation of the Global Gateway strategy.

“Building resilience is one of the priorities of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Jakub Wiśniewski presented Poland’s goals in the area of international development and humanitarian cooperation during his speech to the European Parliament’s Committee on Development (DEVE).

Supporting the building of resilience in public institutions and societies in developing countries as well as the issue of development financing were the main topics of discussion during the informal Council for Foreign Affairs in the format of Ministers for Development (FAC DEV) on 10-11 February 2025 in Warsaw.

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has demonstrated unprecedented solidarity with refugees from Ukraine, spending billions of dollars to ensure that refugees have access to education, healthcare, and social welfare on par with Polish citizens. At the same time, Poland has stepped up on the world stage to support UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Agency’s operations in Sudan, Ukraine, Syria, and Armenia, contributing over USD 3.7 million in 2024 – a record amount for Poland.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski met in Warsaw with the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Marko Bošnjak.

On Wednesday, 4 December, Poland and Sweden held consultations on development cooperation in Stockholm. Deputy Foreign Minister Jakub Wiśniewski met with Diana Janse, Sweden’s State Secretary to Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and Jakob Granit, the Director-General of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
