Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate

The workshops were organised in cooperation with, among others, the International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (ICHIP) programme of the U.S. Department of Justice and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Their purpose was to facilitate the exchange of experience and strengthen international cooperation in combating crime involving medicinal products.

One item on the programme was a panel discussion entitled “Advancing Investigations with Health and Regulatory Agencies”, devoted to the role of public health and regulatory authorities in supporting investigations conducted by law enforcement agencies. Piotr Michalski, a coordinator in the Internal Control and Compliance Department of the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate (CPI), joined representatives of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and regulatory authorities from Romania and Ukraine on the panel.

During his presentation, Piotr Michalski outlined the CPI’s structure, responsibilities and powers, with particular emphasis on its cooperation with Polish law enforcement bodies and state services, including the Police, Border Guard and National Revenue Administration. He also discussed practical aspects of using available analytical tools and databases to identify irregularities in the legal supply chain for medicinal products.

The workshops provided an opportunity to exchange experience in combating the falsification of medicinal products and to strengthen cooperation among institutions responsible for public health security. The participation of a representative of the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate made it possible to present solutions used in Poland and share experience with partners from other countries in combating pharmaceutical crime.
