"Medicines are not sweets" - GIF rejoins the European campaign

01.06.2026

From 1 to 9 June 2026, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate is once again taking part in the international information campaign "Medicines are not sweets". Its aim is to raise patients' awareness of the responsible and safe use of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.

"Medicines are not sweets" - GIF rejoins the European campaign

Over-the-counter medicines are widely available and are often the first option for treating minor ailments such as pain, fever or cold symptoms. However, their widespread availability does not mean that they can be used arbitrarily.

Together with the European institutions responsible for the supervision of the pharmaceutical market, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspector reminds us: medicines are not sweets. Improper use of medicines – including exceeding the recommended doses, taking the preparation for too long or unknowingly combining several products containing the same active substance – can lead to side effects and serious health consequences.

This year's edition of the campaign, carried out simultaneously in many European countries, focuses not only on reminding patients of the basic principles of safe self-medication, but also on providing patients with practical educational materials. As part of the campaign, short videos, guides and practical tips will be published to help patients make proper use of the information provided in package leaflets and on medicine packaging.

During the campaign, we will remind you of the most important rules for the safe use of OTC medicines:

🔹 Read the package leaflet before you use the medicines

The package leaflet contains information about indications, contraindications, possible side effects, interactions and how to use the product.

🔹 Observe the dosage and time of use

Do not exceed the recommended dose or maximum duration of use without consulting your doctor or pharmacist.

🔹 Pay attention to active substances and possible interactions

Different products may contain the same active substance. Concomitant use of several preparations may lead to unconscious exceeding of the safe dose or interactions.

🔹 Remember that children need special caution

Not all medicines intended for adults can be used in children. Always check the age recommendations in the package leaflet before giving a medicine to a child.

Educational materials will be published from 1 to 9 June 2026 on the official profiles of the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X.
