Safe transport of controlled medicines abroad
Travelling with medicinal products, particularly those containing controlled substances, requires appropriate preparation. To help patients avoid difficulties at border crossings, the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspectorate has prepared a guide entitled "Patient's Pharmaceutical Compass - Medicines Closer to You. Transport of Controlled Medicines for Personal Use.”
The guide clearly explains when the transport of a medicinal product requires an official document, how to verify whether a given medicine contains a controlled substance, and which Pharmaceutical Inspection authority is competent to issue the relevant document. It also provides information on the required documentation, the expected processing time, the period of validity of the issued document, and the rules governing its use. In addition, the publication includes practical guidance on the safe transport of medicinal products, including recommendations on their proper storage during travel.
The guide is of an informative nature and does not replace the applicable legal provisions. It is intended to provide practical support to individuals who wish to continue their treatment while travelling abroad, in a safe manner and in compliance with applicable regulations. Patients are encouraged to verify the regulations in force in the destination country prior to departure.
